RSBS is a five-month project (May 2005-October 2005) to investigate the scientific status in seven fields relating to environmental sustainability (see below). Based on an extensive review of global literature, interviews and questionnaires with some 170 leading experts and scholars in Japan, the US, and Europe, two reports are being compiled and released autumn – winter, 2005.

The main report, “Science on Sustainability 2006” is in Japanese, 286 pages, and was launched Oct. 31st, 2005 at Keidanren - the Japanese Business Federation - with the participation of some 400 Japanese corporations and individuals. The report is based on a review of science and aimed primarily at decision-makers in politics and business. A shorter summary report will also be published, both in Japanese and in English and made publicly available on this designated website in December 2005. On the website, you will also find a list of referenced literature for further research by interested readers.

The objective of the project is to create a credible and easily accessible (readable) scientific document to support the decision-making of political and business leaders. The reports compiled will not contain any specific policy proposals. The aim is to focus on clarifying the view of science and urge decision-makers to base their decisions and actions on a solid scientific foundation.

Further, corporations and non-profits may use the reports as educational material free of charge (a company may acquire the document and with permission from the secretariat to print for staff use). Students may use the reports and related website with literature references for study and research purposes. The general public may read the reports to gain an overview of the scientific status of research into environmental sustainability
